My students need comfort. I want to give my room a "home" feel so I’m planning to fill my room with comfortable chairs and to create a “living room” atmosphere where kids can read and write.
I have a group of about 60 students who have come from 4 different elementary schools to middle school. They usually come in nervous; worried about getting lost in our circular school, worried about forgetting locker combinations, worried about what middle school is all about. Our students each enter into one "team" with two core teachers and will spend most of their days at school with one or the other of their "team" teachers.
For the first time, my students are outside of the comfort zones of the schools that they've known for years and the social groups that they've grown comfortable with- I want to give them a comfortable classroom to serve as their new home-base.
They come to me nervous about this new, big school but eager to grow up. They are silly kids one moment, and yearning to be viewed as knowledgeable members of their communities the next. They want to feel valued as people but need to be comfortable in their new world of middle school. They are growing every day- physically and intellectually. I'm here to foster their growth and do my best to move obstacles out of their way.
My Project
I want to create a "home" feeling in my classroom for my students. They are so out of their comfort zones coming into middle school and I want to make them more comfortable. I have used lamp lights in my room instead of the overhead lights for years and my students have loved it. They even correct substitute teachers when they turn on the ceiling lights. Designing my room to be as welcoming as possible is important to me.
I want to go beyond good lighting to more of a living room feel to my classroom.
This will be somewhere students are comfortable to get cozy and read a good book or get to writing.
