Making a Difference, One Laser Printed PPE at a Time

My Students
In these strange times, we are ready to learn in a new setting with the same excitement and enjoyment. Currently, my students have been stuck at home and learning via Zoom and self-paced lecture videos. It is a huge departure from our normal hand-on, experiential learning, collaborative, engaging learning environment.
Most students have a smart device to access learning materials but there are students who still struggle to gain access to technology.
This pandemic has widened the technological divide for those who have no technology access, for those who rely too heavily technology, and for those to have opportunities with tech and experiential learning.
My Project
As we watch first responders, doctors and nurses help others, it's a common feeling for my students to feel anxious, uncomfortable, and helpless in the situation. My students are trained to think creatively, be innovative, and take initiative when communities are in need. Throughout the year, we flex our design thinking muscles to help solve complex global issues. Here we are faced with a real problem and my students are ready to make a real impact.
This Glowforge 3D Laser Printer will provide to my students a hands-on experience in making a positive effort in this crisis.
We will be able to continue our learning of design thinking, help our communities, and help our students make an impact in this pandemic. My students will work together in teams to design, prototype, create and package PPE, face shields, and ear savers for our communities. As we continue to distance learn and begin our summer learning, students will learn how to use design software, project manage distantly, and laser print on their own. Our goal is to continue working by flexing our STEM and design thinking skills, and helping our community this summer with this project.
