Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are five 4th grade classrooms at my school. In my classroom I have on average 28 students, but can go as high as 32. About half of my class is comprised of ELL students who are identified or reclassified, with many who receive free or reduced lunch.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds: two-parent households, single-parents households, foster families, and grandparents raising students.
My students are hard workers and love coming to school. This project will allow my students the opportunity to engage in learning in a new novel way.
My Project
I have been slowing creating a STEAM focus in my classroom the last few years in an effort to help my students engage in the 21st century skills they will need for their future careers. Unfortunately, this can get very costly. Makey Makeys are a cost effective tool for my students to gain access to these skills.
Makey Makey kits will allow my students to use their creativity to create, problem solve, design, evaluate, and improve their inventions.
Using the engineering design process, students will learn how to improve their design through experimenting.
Technology comes easy to most students these days. They know how to push a button to make something work. What students do not have exposure to is the designing and programming that goes into the system that allows us to push a button. These Makey Makeys kits will allow students to become the engineer and learn the steps needed to reach the end result of pushing a button and creating a reaction.
