When students in our school enter the library they are energetic and inquisitive, full of imagination and creativity, and in need of more unplugged ways to channel that creative energy.
My students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds in a community that is supportive, but has a pocketbook that is spread pretty thin.
Our school has a Chinese immersion program in which about 50% of our students are enrolled. The remainder of the students are in a traditional school setting and program. This makes for some interesting demographic challenges in all of the classrooms. The library is one of the places where all of those students meet, learn, and play together.
My Project
MakerSpaces are an educational trend in libraries across the nation and have proven to be beneficial for the development of creativity, critical thinking skills, and collaborative skills--all in a fun, safe environment. I have a big stump with pre-drilled holes and screws and nuts and bolts. The screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers that I have requested will allow children a way to learn to use basic tools in construction of anything they choose. All of those tools, of course, require a place of storage, such as the pegboard storage kit, where they will remain readily accessible and visible. The marble stunt sets will allow them the opportunity to work collectively, problem solve, and create.
Your generous donation will help create a space where creative learning is possible.
It will help develop a love of learning and exploration in eager young hearts and minds. With the creation of a MakerSpace in our library, those energetic, inquisitive, creative minds will have a place to stretch and grow in ways that we don't have the means for otherwise.
