Our students are students who are excited to learn about technology, but often don't have the desire to read. While we aren't a Title I school yet, our numbers are close. As a result, we don't qualify for some of the special services that a Title I school does receive. However, we have so many students without homes, support at home, and books on their bookshelves.
These students not only struggle with hunger and poverty, but also struggle with completing assignments.
Many of our students are not excited to come to school. In fact, there are many that are not excited about anything. Then, we have the other students that we battle with. These students struggle with focus, anxiety and their addiction to technology.
As a result, we are creating a unit to help connect these students to our classrooms and to open their eyes to the possibility that our classrooms can be entertaining, safe, fun and educational.
My Project
In Montana, we have long winters! My students are wanting a Makerspace in my classroom to help support our service-learning project. We sell hot chocolate and lemonade to help support our local hospital oncology unit by purchasing K-Cups and Keurigs for those patients when they visit for chemotherapy and radiation treatments. However, this year we are unable to sell hot chocolate. So this is their plan B.
Students can use technology, stay out of trouble during lunch, and use their creativity to help with our service-learning project.
In addition, I want to bring my functional text unit alive. What better way to teach functional text than to have them create and learn with a hands-on project? Students will have to follow directions, read manuals, and then create their own projects.
We definitely could have these made for us, but my students want to be a part of the process and learn how to create and market these. They want to be involved in helping people kick cancer to the curb. They will design their own shirts and cut the vinyl to create these.
