My students need supplies such as cordless scissors, blocks, fabric marker and much more to allow them to work on various design challenges in a MakerSpace setting.
My students are from an urban performing arts magnet high school of approximately 1700 students. Numerous classes use the library each day for lessons, research, collaboration and exploration. The library is a space many students choose to visit during their free time: lunch, before and after school. This time allows them to read, work on assignments, build community and participate in other activities. I want to encourage all my students, both traditional and magnet to explore and be creative.
My students, both traditional and magnet, are very creative artistically, musically, and dramatically and I want to provide them with a safe place to amplify their voice and share their ideas.
With that vision I began a monthly Open Mic session during the lunch periods two years ago which is well attended by both traditional and magnet students who enjoy sharing with one another in a non-threatening space.
I would like to provide another opportunity for students to be able to freely express their creativeness which will allow my traditional students more opportunities and a space and time to collaborate with their magnet counterparts on imaginative, creative projects.
My Project
My goals is to establish a maker culture by developing an interactive learning environment that will encourage students to change, manipulate and alter their designs using a variety of materials and supplies.
The assortment of materials in this request will allow my students to think "outside the box" when presented with various design challenges.
The cordless power scissors will allow students to use a variety of materials such as cardboard to create their projects. A hot glue gun will provide the ability to secure and build during the creative process. I would like to incorporate jewelry design challenges using the pony beads and textiles challenges with the loom. Students always like to fold paper into shapes and designs. Challenges using origami will teach sequencing skills. Lego challenges will foster problem solving, communication and team building.
All the design challenges will be developed to encourage creativity and teamwork. Students from both the magnet and traditional programs will have an opportunity to share, interact and develop their own personal strengths.
