My school is an inner city, urban magnet high school. The students I am targeting in this project have scored at the lowest level of our state's high stakes reading test. 47% of our students in 9th grade scored at a Level 1 or 2 and 56% of our students in 10th grade scored at the same level. Over 50% of the student body is on free or reduced lunch. All 9th and 10th graders have been placed in reading classes to help improve their reading skills in preparation of the yearly test which is administered statewide in the spring. I am trying to help improve their reading skills by finding ways to encourage them to practice reading. I will expose them to various types of literature. For those who are successful on a computerized test when quizzed on the books they have read, I will provide rewards.
