My Students
Don't make excuses. Work hard and shoot for the moon. My students are limited English speakers. My job is to get them to be fluent speakers in the year that they are in my class. Therefore, they must take school seriously in order to succeed in life. They will be able to do anything as adults.
My students are Chinese, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Indian, Vietnamese and Fillipino.
Many are limited English speakers, who attend an inner city school. They are 5th graders eager to learn. My job is to teach them English. One of the ways I teach English is using music and singing songs. Of course, we work on pronunciation, enunciation, grammar, sentence structures and more, but in a fun way. By the close of the school year, English is strengthened as reflected, historically, by test scores and teacher observation. The learning of songs will culminate in 4 choral music concerts presented to parents, students, senior citizens and students at another school. This year's concerts will be our 8th year performing! Among our songs are Fame, Old Man River, What a Wonderful World, We are the World and Guantanamera. Surely, I am challenging my students to rise to the occasion. It is huge motivation for the students to learn when they have performances to look forward to.
My Project
My principal has said on many occasions that English is the cash language. My students, who are 10 and 11 years old, will grow up in a world where they will be great communicators if they apply what they learn, work hard and stay focused in school.I expect improvement as they move through the grades, and I am confident they they will succeed. Success comes incrementally and one of their successes will be performing at 4 culminating choral concerts at the end of the school year, as a result of studying English. Students will have learned that hard work, persistence, teamwork and focus were skills that were important in their learning journey.
As students grow up, some may remember their elementary school years and others may not. A tangible way to remember is to give each student a remembrance photo album of their concerts, and these require ink cartridges and photo paper.
Students succeed when they are supported.
We must give them tools to make it. Having command of English is a major goal. Our music and culminating concerts are means to this end. Our music program also creates self esteem because they will feel great when parents and teachers clap for them in the concerts. The community at large can help to make a difference through financial support that will help teachers obtain supplies. Your support of "Make Your Own Kind of Music" will help us.
