Students are given an opportunity to showcase their singing and dancing talents in a Spring musical concert scheduled in May 2009 before parents, community friends, teachers and peers. My students are 5th graders who live in an urban environment in a challenged neighborhood of San Francisco. Many are children of immigrants from Iraq, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Yemen, and Mexico. As a result, many students are first generation English learners. I teach in a self contained classroom where learning English is a primary focus of instruction. It is very important that they increase their English skills before they go on to middle school next year so that they keep apace with fellow students.
