My Students

Most of my Kindergarten students are just emerging with their knowledge of letter names and sounds. Since reading is still several months away, my students are reliant upon the adults in their lives to expose them to all of the wonderful books written specifically for them.

About half of my Kindergarten students have attended preschool and for the other half, Kindergarten is their first adventure in school.

My school serves a working class community that is comprised of many bilingual residents. While our school is a California distinguished school, we are still working to make academic gains with our Latino/a students. Exposing students to fluent reading is critical for English language acquisition and reading instruction. Books on CD are a wonderful means of exposing my students to fluent reading.

My Project

Bringing books on CD into my classroom will make it possible for me to offer a listening center to my students. A listening center is incredibly valuable because it exposes students to fluent reading and a wide range of children's literature. A listening center will be a very popular activity during center time. Center time is a time when students work independently to accomplish an academic activity. This time builds students' autonomy and the activities strengths students' literary skills.

Everyone has favorite books they were introduced to as a young child.
