I have a group of Kindergarten students who are diverse in their learning needs, family backgrounds and ethnic makeup. Many of the twenty students in my class live in the neighborhood. Three of my students take the bus to and from school and two more students attend an on site daycare program in the morning and afternoon. Four of my students have parents that are monolingual Spanish speakers. In order to communicate with Spanish speaking parents, my classroom newsletter is translated in Spanish each month. School wide, many parents speak only Spanish, and therefore, all of the literature that goes home on a weekly basis, is provided in both languages. My Elementary School is a Title 1 School that serves about 499 students in grades K-5. In 2010, my school scored enough points, as tracked on the Academic Performance Index, to no longer qualify as a program improvement school.
