Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, I have an amazing bunch of students who deserve so much! The majority of them have after-school jobs and come from low-income households. My classroom is a place for them to feel welcome and at home in, to hopefully be a safe haven for many of them.
Many struggle with reading comprehension and writing skills, but they don't let that stop them from trying their hardest.
They are determined to improve and graduate, many of them being seniors. I love how confident they are and how much they put into their studies; they don't let anything bring them down, and they don't give up on themselves.
My Project
Comfortable student-centered reading nooks are harder to find in the standard high school classroom and I want to change that. Many reading nook areas are seen in elementary schools and disappear as the students get older. I want to bring that back for my students, give them a space they can be comfortable in. I've brought in some comfortable seating for them and a area carpet to enjoy books on but I'd like to add a little more literature and comfort to the area.
These modern novels will be appreciated by my students and they had a great time putting in their suggestions.
Their reading nook is comfortable but we need one more flexible seating chair to make rotating easier. Every day they choose where they sit and take a book or clipboard with them to do their work and everyone must give others in the class a chance to sit in the flexible seating chairs on different days. One more will increase the rotation so they do not have to wait so long to have a turn. With great literature and seating also comes a warm cup of tea or hot cocoa to enjoy and the tea drinkers chose their favorite tea they could agree on. I just love seeing these students enjoy their classroom space and the content they are exposed to, without it being too clinical and tedious. This would mean so much to them, thank you!
