My 3, 4, and 5-year-old students are curious, kind, lively, and determined. The diversity in our classroom reflects that of our beautiful city. We have students of so many ethnicity learning here, as well as students of varying abilities. Some are native English speakers and some are still learning how to speak. Our classroom speaks many languages and we represent even more countries and cultures.
My students are so full of wonder- they are writers, artists, tinkerers, scientists, and thinkers.
Their engagement and joy inspire me every day.
My Project
The early childhood years are essential for encouraging exploration, creativity, language, and of course- a love of learning! Each day, there's a 60-minute block of time called "centers," which my colleagues and I believe is the most essential part of our schedule. It is during center time that deep, experiential learning happens. There are opportunities to create art, write, build, practice literacy skills, and STEM skills. By providing my students with beautiful materials to explore, they will feel encouraged to touch, play, and learn. These materials include the Magna-Tiles, blocks, beads, and the multi-use builder board. The possibilities are endless when the children are given open-ended materials to work with.
We will read books together that not only provide visual inspiration to create but also highlight role models who made an impact on the creative world.
The role models include people who may represent minorities or groups that have been marginalized in the past.
