Each day, approximately one hundred students walk through the doors of our school library. These students are energetic, enthusiastic, and eager to see what the library holds for them on their visit. Our school is located in a rural community with a high poverty level. 100% of our students receive free lunch, and access to educational tools and opportunities at home is extremely limited.
Most of these students have never visited a public library, and many of them have no access to the resources that would be available in a public library setting.
Our students are excited about learning, and they thrive on authentic experiences that allow them to apply their knowledge. Providing them with opportunities to create and innovate within the school library will inspire further learning and deeper understanding.
My Project
My students need supplies, such as Perler beads, patterned duct tape and Origami paper, for our school library's makerspace. Origami paper, duct tape, stamps, and Perler beads will provide students with opportunities to extend their learning in creative and exciting ways. Our new makerspace will encourage students to explore new outlets and applications for the academic content they are learning in the classroom and in the library.
Our library's new makerspace will provide a welcoming area for collaboration, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving.
Working with others in a creative setting to accomplish a task will strengthen skills required for success in today's world. Many of our students do not have access to these types of materials at home, or even in the classroom, so our makerspace will open doors that might otherwise remain closed to them.
