My classroom is a Pre-K classroom consisting of 4-year-old boys and girls. Many of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes in the inner city of the largest urban school district in the state. The majority come from homes where English is a second language. The students and their parents manage to rise above it and come to school daily ready to learn through play.
A typical day in our classroom is full of laughter and a sense of security.
They look forward to the hands-on activities that help to foster a sense of community.
My Project
Children's play often imitates what they see in the world around them. Household items like a vacuum, broom, mop and cleaning supplies, a blender, and toaster all help them role play the different jobs in a family. A doctor kit and cash register expand their role playing to include community helpers.
My students need items that imitate real life tools they see in their everyday lives.
Through role play the students can explore different family and community roles, expand their understanding of personal interactions, and develop empathy for one another. Role playing also helps my ESL students develop a common vocabulary of everyday English.
