My Project

"Ms. Tobler, I have an idea," one of my brilliant students exclaimed. "Let's make a little garden so we can plant some lavender and a little butterfly bush and maybe some herbs?" She continued to explain that we could have planter boxes since we do not have much space, and each table group could choose flowers or herbs to plant and grow.

Students crave the opportunity to learn and grow through gardening!

Gardens help young minds grow and inspire natural curiosity. Gardening is a great way to get these young people outside for experiential learning, to build community, and to give them something to think about beyond their phones or social media or the latest school gossip.

As we grapple with ongoing effects of climate change (pandemics, wildfires, extreme weather events, and more), learning gardens give schools, teachers, and communities the opportunity to craft local and community resilience. More importantly, by getting our hands in the dirt, we make time for joy and wonder for our students.

Our newly built school includes a lovely little outdoor learning area, where we will be able to plant, water, and nurture our new green worlds. With this project, my seventh graders will start the process of creating a garden and green space. Perhaps we will drink tea with the peppermint we have grown? Perhaps we will study the adaptations of the butterflies, earthworms, or isopods our baby plants have invited?
