My Students

I am delighted to serve as the school librarian and STEAM program director at a small school in a rural area. While many of my students are greatly impacted by poverty and family issues--and, more recently, the pandemic--they still retain an incredible sense of curiosity and wonder that they share with me each day, and their enthusiasm never ceases to amaze me.

Their love of reading and learning new things, both via text and tech, is truly a thing of beauty.

My Project

The furniture in the main gathering area of our library is quite possibly as old as our school building, which was constructed in the 1950s. The chairs are unevenly balanced and many are cracking (and have been known to pinch students' fingers and grab at students' hair).

A safe, bright, and welcoming environment promote better learning!

New furniture that is safer, more functional, and more aesthetically pleasing will enhance students' learning during collaborative library lessons. Having flexible seating options will make library activities more accessible to a wider variety of students, e.g., those needing kinetic outlets.

We're a small Title I school, which means that our budget is correspondingly small. That doesn't mean, however, that our students don't deserve a lovely library. Having furniture that is downright decrepit--and "bites," as one of my youngest students said--sends the wrong message to our kids: that they aren't worth it. They ARE. Please help us to make our space a place in which kids can completely and safely enjoy spending time. With your assistance, they'll be sitting pretty!
