Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school with the only public Early Childhood Montessori program in Salt Lake City, UT. Our students are 3-6 years old, and 94% are students of color. They spend three years in our classroom, two years of Pre-K, and one year of Kindergarten. The best part of being in a multi-age classroom is seeing how much the students learn from each other and how they take care of one another.

Being their teacher and watching them learn and grow for three years is one of the greatest gifts of my life.

Teaching my students for three consecutive years makes it possible for me to become incredibly close to my students and their families. My students are a huge part of my life in and outside of school.

My Project

Children's literature lacks representation of diverse backgrounds. When students don't see themselves represented in books, they feel that their identities and experiences are not worth seeing.

According to 2018 publishing statistics, children's books depicting diverse backgrounds were: 1% Indigenous Peoples, 5% Latinx, 7% Asian Pacific Islander/ Asian Pacific American, 10% Black, 27% Animals, and 50% White.

77% of the books published did not include people of color.

94% of my students are people of color.

I want to expand my collection of books that represent diverse backgrounds. When my students see themselves portrayed in books, it strengthens their self-concept and builds their self-esteem. They feel that their lives and experiences are valued. They learn that all types of identities and cultures deserve respect. It also enhances their empathy for others.
