Children's literature lacks representation of diverse backgrounds. When students don't see themselves represented in books, they feel that their identities and experiences are not worthy of being seen. According to 2018 publishing statistics, children's books depicting diverse backgrounds were: 1% Indigenous Peoples, 5% Latinx, 7% Asian Pacific Islander/ Asian Pacific American, 10% Black, 27% Animals and 50% White. 77% of the books published did not include people of color. 94% of my students are people of color. I want to expand my collection of books that represent diverse backgrounds. When my students see themselves portrayed in books it strengthens their self-concept and builds their self-esteem. They feel that their lives and experiences are valued. They learn that all types of identities and cultures deserve respect. It also enhances their empathy for others. Since the start of the pandemic, I continue to virtually read to my students five days a week.
