Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English to half of the 7th graders at my school. This year, that’s 172 students! My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some come to me speaking very little English while others are already advanced at reading and writing in English. In my class, I work to foster a community of learners who help me and each other with their patience and critical-thinking. My students are full of energy, enthusiasm, and empathy, and I feel so lucky to work with them!
My Project
There is much research to support the positive effects of music on learning. I currently play music in my classroom through one old speaker (its partner is broken) connected to my computer at the front of my class. I play music during transitions in my classes and during writing. What I would like is to be able to play better-sounding music more consistently.
And that is why, through this project, I am requesting a pair of JBL Flip 5 speakers.
There will definitely be some improvements if I am able to add these speakers to my classroom. I would like to consistently implement the following protocols:
-Playing upbeat music as students enter the class
-Playing transition music between activities
-Playing instrumental music during writing or independent activities
-Playing end of class music
I have seen the positive effects of music in my classroom, even through my current speakers aren't the most effective. The other day, I played an upbeat song as students filed into the room. Some students danced and/or sang as they grabbed their Chromebooks. It set the mood for a positive experience. Likewise, instrumental tunes played during quiet work seems to help define the expectations and help students focus. I can't wait to see how my students respond to a higher-quality sound system!
