Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are identified as in need of Special Education. They only attend and engage in school when they feel safe and comfortable. They engage in learning when the topic is of high interest to them and when they experience success and pride at mastering the content and subjects. Anything having to do with skills they will need to be independent in the world is useful to them and they are sometimes embarrassed to share that they don't know much about some things that they feel they should know already. They are an AWESOME group of students who will so appreciate anything done for them.

My Project

I need high interest materials on the subject of Finance in the form of games and workbooks as well as tried and tested materials developed by other teachers to be able to do a 1 to 2 month focused elective on the basics of financial concepts with hands-on activities. Some of my students still need to learn to count money, even at high school age! Students will have their own whiteboards to do the work on to make the class as interactive as possible. They will opt-in to this class through their Resource room time.

My students come from an urban area where they have access to most anything but have difficulty interacting in the business world.

They are hesitant about this because they don't fundamentally understand money and finances and how they work in all facets of life.

The materials I purchase will allow my students to spend 2 to 3 80-minute classes per week for approximately 1-2 months in learning all things financial. By the end of the unit, they will be able to interact in the business community with confidence and conviction.

Learning Financial Literacy will help them participate more fully in their current households as well as prepare them for the working world and living on their own.
