In the Comfy Corner, my students can leave their traditional desks and chairs for a sofa, soft chair, or carpet along with softer lighting to encourage relaxation, calm, and focused writing or reading. They can utilize fidget gadgets, read books, listen to music, or chat in a comfortable environment that does not increase their anxiety like a high demand academic task might. There are tables to help keep everything organized, leading to a greater feeling of caring and safety. Sometimes the traditional desks and chairs and lighting are emotionally too much for my students and they need a calm and comforting environment to relax in. My students will also be expected to clean up the area themselves; thus the need for an electric broom!
