Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has a diverse population with a variety of backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and academic strengths. We are a Title I school and many of our students come from families who struggle financially, or face adversity in their everyday lives. Despite the challenges, our students are filled with energy, are hard-working, and are motivated to learn. My students have learning disabilities and their deficits can negatively impact more than their ability to function in the literate world; it can also tear apart their sense of self-worth and self-belief. They have to exert more effort than the average student to learn the basic components of language, reading, and writing. In order to thrive, I want to provide reading materials that capture their interest in a way that makes it easier for them to read the words and understand what they are reading.
My Project
My students love graphic novels because they offer picture support for the words that they are reading. These graphic novels will provide an alternative format of reading as the graphics aid in comprehension and storytelling. Graphic novels are particularly supportive for kids with specific reading challenges. For my students with dyslexia, the illustrations provide context clues and the manageable format and length make it possible to feel accomplishment.
TOON Graphic book collection capture readers imaginations by incorporating diverse characters and high-interest subjects in a way that bring text to life.
This collection will be used for paired and individual reading by student choice.
