My Students

Calculators are a means to help those struggling with the basic math facts move on to a higher level of thinking. Calculators help those who excel to explore the world in ways we never knew.

My 7th grade students are wonderful, dynamic young adults.

They see the world through closed doors because of their families' economic status. They are lucky to attend a charter school that gives them the support, love and motivation for creating a stellar human being. My students attend an inner city charter school in Eastern Pennsylvania. Nearly all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch provided by the school, in hopes to promote happy, healthy, loved children. These children go to school each day hoping to become successful doctors and lawyers, trying to make it out of their poverty-stricken living conditions. Despite their outward appearances, these children have the stamina, determination, and heart to be successful citizens.

My Project

Many of my students lack the basic multiplication and division skills. A calculator allows them to move forward, learning more in-depth concepts without the struggle of their basic facts. If a skill as minor as this is holding them back, it is up to us teachers to find a way around that. The other half of my students excel at math and are always looking for the next challenge. However, without calculators, algebraic functions, quick fraction to decimal conversions, and real world applications become non-existent.

The school has failed to reach the Annual Yearly Progress for the past to years.

Due to a lack of funding in certain departments, technological resources like calculators cannot be bought. When students have the right tools, anything is possible. Simple skills should not hinder a child to move forward in understanding mathematical concepts present in every day. Calculators help those struggling students learn bigger and better concepts and challenge those students who excel in math.
