Make Math Meaningful to Me!

My students need math resources such as word problem flip books and literature that correlates with math skills.

I teach a group of future doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, secretaries, preachers, football players, and magicians. These fourth graders are very eager to achieve their goals, and they need your help to reach them!

As a school, we struggle in the area of math. This year is very important because we are trying to raise our scores in the area of math on state mandated tests. Last year, we did not meet some of the goals we needed to, and each teacher is trying his or her hardest to give each student as much help as they give so we can reach those goals this year. As a student, math was always my favorite subject, and day by day, I try to help my students with this difficult subject. With only textbooks and workbooks, it is hard to make math meaningful to a group of nine-year-old students that just do not understand some of the topics. Math is an important subject because it is seen all over the world, and I want to give my students the opportunity to learn these skills at an early age, so they can reach any goal they choose in the future.

I have chosen two resources for my students to use and one resource for me to use that will enhance each student's education. Most students love reading, and this is why I have chosen the ten children's book that correlate with the math skills. By reading these books and doing activities that are outlined in the teacher's resource book, students can learn math skills without even realizing they are doing math. The skills discussed in these children's books are the exact skills that my students struggle with on state mandated tests, and the books would be great to reinforce these skills in small or whole group settings. The other resource I chose would help students with the dreaded word problems. Students seem to have a hard time working this type of problem, but the flip books that allow students to piece together their own word problems could almost make math seem like a game. These flip books allow students to manipulate the pages and take word problems step by step. As students flip pieces of the page, prompts are given to help students solve the problems as well. All of these resources would motivate those students that are struggling in the area of math.

Your help will ensure that my students meet their goals in the area of math, and most importantly, make it more possible for them to enjoy a subject that has been hated by many.
