My students need math manipulatives such as dominoes, dice and a 100s chart. They also need writing tools such as expo markers, a pencil sharpener, and privacy folders for math lessons throughout the year.
I am a first year teacher that has limited classroom supplies and materials. I want to share my love for math and science with all of my students. By providing them with math manipulatives, they will be able to engage each other through a hands-on and interactive way of learning.
I have the privilege of working at a quaint and cozy school just outside of Houston.
My students are all unique and different in their own special way. I teach the 2nd grade English Second Language class for math and science. Majority of the students in my class are from overseas and will transition both in and out of my classroom throughout the year due to their parents jobs.
The students are very energetic, love to learn and interact with each other. They enjoy challenging each other at stations and working hands on in groups. My students rarely sit at their desks and independently work. Instead, students travel to various spots in the room to complete engaging work with partners. Students switch classes halfway through the day which allows my resources to be shared with twice as many students.
My Project
I will only be teaching math and science, the materials will be used all day, every day in my classroom by double the regular amount of students. The students will use the materials daily during our math talks, calendar time, problem solving as well as math stations. The students will be able to use the expo markers at their desks, as well as at the teacher table. There is something about dry erase markers that make math more fun to students. Dominoes, cards and dice will be used during the math stations to create problems for students to solve. My students will also be using privacy folders during fact fluency quizzes and tests.
With these resources, I envision a classroom where students are engaged in their work, having fun and learning. These supplies will help my students be able to work alone, in pairs as well as small groups. By providing these science and math materials, my students will have the opportunity to have hands-on experiences they can connect to the real world.
These supplies will significantly impact my students' lives for the better.
As a first year teacher there are many items needed to complete my classroom. Your donations will help me share my love for math and science with my students. These tools will help students see that math can be fun and is all around us. The more that students enjoy what they are doing, the more work being done and ultimately more learning! I want my classroom to be a place where students are eager to learn and work!
