Help me give my students Hands-On Math Teaching Kits to help them grasp math concepts.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The days of having students sit quietly at desks lined up in a row listening to lectures are long gone. My students thirst for hands-on learning. They enjoy working with their peers, participating in class projects, and being creative.
Often times, they don't come to school with the tangible tools they need to learn.
When these tools are provided, they thrive academically and socially. My school is located in a low-income area, and many of the students live within walking distance of the school. Many of them are responsible for getting themselves up and ready for school without the assistance of an adult.
There are times when this causes them to be late for school, but they do the best they can to catch up with the activities they missed. These same students have trouble getting the materials they need to complete classroom assignments and projects. I don't take off points for not having materials. I do my best to provide each of my students with the tools they need to ensure equity and fairness.
The manipulative that I am requesting for my students will provide ways for them to have tangible materials to assist them with understanding math. The money manipulatives will help them understand the importance of knowing the value of money and how it is utilized in real life. The place value blocks will aid in the ability to understand the value of numbers and how their place makes a difference in how much they are worth.
Being able to physically touch objects will help my students make real-world connections and encourage them to preserve through challenging math standards.
This, in turn, will help them focus on the importance of learning.
