Make Math Fun

My students need snap cubes, dominoes, foam 3D shapes and quiet dice to add to our math center. Giant dice and magnetic shape and place value tools will make demos fun.

My Students

First grade math can be fun, especially if kids have real objects to help them develop concrete skills. This year I would like to resupply some basics like snapping cubes and dice, as well as build a supply of magnetic resources to use with a new magnetic whiteboard.

I teach 22 curious and active first graders.

They really enjoy math activities where they can physically manipulate tools as they gain a stronger sense of numbers and master basic operations. Our school encourages hands-on learning to help meet the needs of all learners.

My Project

Developing early math skills requires engaging teaching and lessons that get kids working with real objects. The magnetic pattern block set and base ten block set will let me demonstrate key concepts in geometry and place value using our wall magnetic whiteboard while kids make their own models at their tables. I will be able to use the large clock to demonstrate reading digital and analog times. This is a tough skill for first graders! We are looking forward to adding the Quiet Dice to the math shelf so our dice games don't get so noisy.

The best math lessons get kids doing, thinking, and talking.

They need many different kinds of materials to develop strong number sense, a foundation in geometry, time telling skills and the ability to fluently compose and decompose numbers. Those materials can eat up a class budget but once they are purchased, they last for years. With your help, we can save our budget and give kids great math materials for years to come.
