My Students

I teach third grade in a low-income, rural school district. Many of our students go without some of the basic, fundamental necessities, but one thing that I know about my students is that no matter how tough things get for them, they have a love for learning and a love for school.

Our focus in class is to build a strong community of learners and a sense of family.

My students know that they are safe, cared for, and loved in my classroom. Not just by me, but by the other students as well.

My students are engaged and focused on their learning, while still having fun. It's always wonderful to hear the students whisper to their classmates (even with the most difficult assignment), "This is fun," or you hear the long-drawn-out, "Yesss!" along with the fist pump, because they're excited for what they're about to learn next. This makes everything about teaching worth it!

My Project

Shut the Box is a fun and easy dice game that students can play in groups of 2, 3, or 4. The game will be used as a supplemental learning tool during small group math enrichment times and it can be used as an "early finisher" incentive.

Developing an understanding of number sense is extremely important for young students.

Shut the box helps students reinforce their understanding of number sense, understand the value of numbers, and increases fluency with addition facts. Students will have fun with this game while learning.
