This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are thoughtful, bright, and creative middle schoolers who carry various Social/Emotional diagnoses. Often their emotional and behavioral challenges make it hard for them to focus and access academic instruction, making them prone to frustration, shutdown , and/ or aggression. These students are working on identifying their triggers as well as building their toolkits (coping/classroom skills).
These students face a host of organic and environmental challenges that impact their ability to learn math and science.
Without the right supports, these students are considered high risk for academic failure.
My Project
Math is many students least favorite subject in school but is one that they need the most help in. To keep my students engaged with learning math, they need colorful, exciting materials to learn with.
They need hands-on materials to make math fun again!
They need X/Y Axis whiteboards to practice coordinate pairs, 6/7/8th grade workbooks to practice math drills in, and hands-on geometric solid shapes to physically see the abstract shapes they are asked to find the volume. My students need math games like Geometry and Algebra Bingo, as well as Fraction Pizza in order to have fun while practicing their math skills. They need to have bulletin boards (and bulletin board materials) on which they can proudly display their work. They also need Post-It chart paper and markers.
The more fun they have with learning, the more likely it is that they will continue to want to learn beyond their middle school years.
