My students helped me unbox the items last spring and we organized the items into the blue colored bins that came in our project. We then brought these bins to our sensory room to organize the shelves with the different products. It felt really great having such a variety of items for our students.\r\n\r\nSince the products arrived near the end of last school year, we did not really get a chance to use them. However, this year, we've already had several students in need of personal care items. Here is one quick story: In my colleague's math class, she noticed that one of her female students was quieter than usual and just seemed off. She asked her student to speak to her privately in the hallway to check in, and learned that her student had unexpectedly gotten her period and did not have a pad. My colleague brought her across the hall to our sensory room, and her student gave an audible gasp when she saw our supply of hygiene items. She took one to use right away, and put a couple more away in her locker to use at a later time. Having this supply of menstrual pads saved the day for this student and likely ended any chances of feeling embarrassed or self-conscious.\r\n\r\nAs we get further into the school year, I am looking forward to helping our students when they need something to make their days easier, whether it be a menstrual pad, deodorant for gym class, a colorful band-aid for a scrape, a new chapstick during those cold and dry winter months, or hair ties for unruly hair days.
