This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first grade teacher in an underprivileged school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our school is 85% African American and 15% Hispanic, and the latest figures show that 97% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. There is very little funding at my school and the PTA has not been able to raise enough money for teacher supplies. As a first year teacher in a poor school, my classroom is rather sparse in supplies, especially math manipulatives. Some things that my classroom desperately needs are balances, rulers, counting cubes, tangrams, geometric shapes, and other hands-on teaching tools. These materials would allow me to make math more concrete and logical for my students, which would allow them to build a stronger base in math as they prepare for the rest of elementary school and beyond. I know that my students will also be more engaged and interested in learning about math when they have the opportunity to use real math resources instead of paper rulers and makeshift balances.
