My Students
My students love to come to school. They are full of energy and are eager to hear what learning experiences await them. Our team works hard to provide meaningful learning opportunities that enhance Agriculture, Spanish and Arts education.
I teach fourth grade in a Title school in rural Wisconsin where 50 % of students receive free breakfast and lunch.
We serve a large population of English Language Learners, whose primary language is Spanish. Many of my students receive free food from the local food pantries during holidays and school breaks. Our school also grows gardens (both raised beds and hydroponic towers). We also have recently added a chicken coop for students to manage.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because we provide a family friendly atmosphere where caring teachers design lessons to meet a wide variety of learning needs.
My Project
Successful reading teachers are able to match the reader and their interest to a highly engaging book. Do you recall your favorite book as a 4th grader? Whether it was the Laura Ingalls books, the Classics or the Boxcar Children series, books have the ability to create warm emotional bonds for students. Books also help kids develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies—much more than any other media. Books are interactive; they demand that kids think. They create MAGIC for kids! This is the reason behind my passion to provide the newest and most engaging book for every reader. We desperately need new library books for our classroom library.
My students love to read when they have new high interests books to pick from.
By encouraging them and allowing students choice in reading magic happens. My students students checkout books from our classroom library much like a regular library. When multiple students want to read the same book, students add their name to a Post-it note that is attached to the front of the book. My students enjoy book talking their favorite books to entice their peers into reading it. Some create book trailers or Google slide shows of their favorites.
Having a wide variety of genres and authors in our classroom library allows students to be exposed to a wide variety of literature. Having a well developed classroom library will have a positive effect on my students' comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, spelling, writing ability and overall academic achievement. As teachers we know that free voluntary reading is the single most important literary activity that occurs in our classrooms.
