My Students
I work in a Title I school in downtown Phoenix. What does this mean? It means that many of my students come to school hungry. It means that many of my students wear hand-me-downs from older brothers and sisters. It also means that my students can come to school with a lot of emotional baggage.
Though my students come to school already behind emotionally and academically, they want to learn so bad.
They do not understand the challenges they face and that is a good thing. My job as their teacher is to push them to their limits and help them succeed.
Kindergarten is such an important year as it sets students up for their educational future. I want to fill their minds with images and scenarios that they could have never imagine existed. I want to give them as much exposure to the real-world that I possibly can. They are our future!
My Project
Sadly, my learning centers have seen better days. They have been loved on for many years and it is time to start replacing some of them. My students learn so much more from a game or puzzle they can play with someone else. They become more engaged when they have a friend to learn with. The phonics puzzles will help my students create words by having the ability to sound out letters. The math games and puzzles will help students with their counting and number sense.
My students are always looking to do "hands-on" assignments and tasks.
Having efficient learning centers and games will help fulfill this need. The learning centers and games are aligned to common core standards, so the students are learning and they don't even know it. All they know is they are having fun. I know they are mastering a needed skill.
