Make Learning Economics Fun on a Budget

I need coaching from the Mobile MakerSpace to help identify how I can add teach concepts like economics and engineering and design to 8th graders.

My Students

Many people think of Cape Cod as a tourist destination, but the heart of Cape Cod is found in the year round people who make the Cape their home. Our district is supported by small business owners and people who work with their hands in many labor intensive jobs like contractors, construction workers, welders,plumbers, electricians and being close to the canal we have many fisherman too. Our students are used to working with their hands from watching their parents.

We need to change the way we teach our students to incorporate more meaningful connections between learning and the real world.

I strive to bring hands-on learning into my classroom. This challenges me to create a course curriculum that is sustainable and also budget friendly. My students would benefit from access to new ways of learning that enhance their skills for the real world at the same time.

My Project

I recognize that curriculum and content standards change all the time. Recently there has been a big push for more hands on learning activities. We have a MakerSpace in my district, and I know there are better ways for me to take advantage of this tool. But one issue is how can I bring these hands on lessons into my classroom and still cover my standards-and how do I do it on a limited budget.

The Mobile MakerSpace will provide me with curriculum I can implement immediately and help me identify grants that will allow me to cover the cost of supplies.

I know my students will learn better when we do more hands on learning but they need to understand the cost of these activities and apply this learning to our content standards. I am excited to learn how to write my own grants to bring hands on learning into my classroom on daily basis.
