When kids walk into my classroom- if every desk looks the same and everything is in a perfect row-then it breeds anxiety within the class. I work to organize desks into group pods and desk pairs, so that we can do more collaborative learning. And this is helpful-but it is not enough. Some kids just have more energy or anxiety that makes it almost impossible to stay seated in a desk. There is no such thing as a normal student, but we still have one size "fits" all seating. Students are individuals and they have individual needs, that can change from day to day. And we need to show students that this is OK, we know they are not all the same. Teaching kids how to recognize when they need to move more, stand up, or sit still is an important part of their learning how handle stress and anxiety through out the school day! My hope is that by having 2 standing desks and flexible bands on other desks in the room, we can have more open conversations about how kids are feeling that specific day. Recognizing that feelings, stress, and anxiety change day to day is a healthy part of recognizing how to have a healthy mindset in school and at home.
