My Project

Learning irregularly spelled words is important because these words often appear frequently in written language and are essential for reading fluency and comprehension. Unlike regularly spelled words, which can be decoded using standard phonics rules, irregular words require students to recognize and remember their unique spellings. Mastering these words helps students read more efficiently, write accurately, and build confidence in their literacy skills.

Using letter and sound tiles can be an effective strategy for learning irregularly spelled words.

Students can manipulate the tiles to physically construct the word, reinforcing its visual and phonetic components. For example, they might arrange tiles to spell the word, highlight the irregular parts (e.g., silent letters or unexpected patterns), and practice saying it aloud. This hands-on, multisensory approach helps students engage with the word more deeply, improving retention and recall. Repeated practice with tiles allows students to internalize these spellings while developing a stronger connection between the word’s appearance, sound, and meaning.
