This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a middle/high school in the urban area of West Baltimore. We focus on educating our students to become great leaders and citizens. Students are celebrated for exhibiting our school's core values: integrity, scholarship, citizenship, perseverance, and sustainability. My students learn best through real-world application, hands-on activities, and authentic experiences. I teach students with diverse abilities, interests, and backgrounds. My students are in various grade levels, but they all thrive when they get to "do" science!
For the 2019-2020 school year, I am teaching Forensic Science, Independent Study Science, and Introduction to Research Methods.
Forensic Science is a popular course with students. The Independent Study Science and Introduction to Research Methods courses are new for my school. STEM/STEAM hands-on activities, cross-curricular projects, and laboratory investigations help my students to learn and apply concepts.
Many of our students want to go into the medical field. Having experiences dealing with independent studies and research in high school will better prepare them for their future colleges and careers choices. I am so excited to be teaching these courses!
My Project
This project will engage students, families, and community partners through Make-and-Take activities. Participants will learn about the physics behind wind chimes as they build one, the chemistry of slime, soap, or candle making, and coding through Sphero while making art. They will be able to use the Cricut Maker and Cricut EasyPress 2 for a variety of items. Students will be the experts during these activities as they guide participants in making a product that they'd be proud to take home.
The first items that my students requested to learn to make are soaps and candles.
While learning the science of candles, soaps, and fragrances, students will learn how to set budgets for the Make-and-Take activities, prices for each event, learn about profit margins, make change, and the value of saving and planning for the future.
