My Students

The biggest (and best) problem that I experience as a Language Arts teacher is finding enough books to have my students read. As the middle school is still a relatively new addition to my school, we are in lack of full class sets of books that I can read and discuss with my class as a whole.

As a first year educator, my students have affirmed all of my hopes and beliefs that accompanied my original dream to become a teacher.

They are kind and thoughtful individuals who all have the curiosity and interest that can only be satisfied and encouraged to grow with good books.

My Project

I am currently developing a unit on fiction writing and Greek Mythology to teach my 6th graders. I cannot think of a better book for them than The Lightning Thief. We will read through this book together as a class and discuss the intricacies of myths and how they stand out from other types of writing. Greek Mythology is full of exciting and interesting stories, and the Percy Jackson series elevates this to a new level, especially for young readers.

Greek Mythology is a genre that I fell in love with when I was about the age of my students.

I want to expose them to this exciting literature, as I already know based off of all of their interests that Percy Jackson is perfect for them. Unfortunately due to lack of funding and supplies, it is at times difficult to acquire a full class set of books for my classroom. This unfortunately means having students miss out on larger discussions and projects.
