Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a great rainbow of diversity! We have students that walk to school and students with military families. Most students receive free and reduced lunch. Many students have been attending our school since transitional Kindergarten and students who have just arrived from an array of other countries such as Russian, Ukraine, and Sudan. Our educational needs are high. Over 30% of my students are on individualized education plans such as learning disabilities, autism, or students with behavioral support plans. We also have section 8 housing that helps parents with more affordable rent. This diversity of cultures, races, and income add to the uniqueness that our school has to offer. This year, each grade level is starting a once a week, 90-minute STEM-focused science lab. We will have access to work in the library and our classrooms.
My Project
I am requesting hands-on science materials such as dominoes, rollercoaster marble sets, legos, to build our own potato alarm clock, white board clocks, hurricane makers, straw rockets, snap circuits lights electronics discovery kit, mini rail rollercoaster, wooden car kit, erupting volcano model, shave gel, liquid measurement set, science education games catapult toy, bottle launcher, tin can robot, weather center, weather tracker set, tornado lab, magnetic clips, kids binoculars, chick life cycle exploration set, green energy science kit, clean water science kit, paper airplanes kit, electronics discovery kit, and sterlite storage containers.
Every week in science lab my 3rd and 4th grade students will access hands-on exploratory science.
Imagine building a rollercoaster marble run and investigating why the marble doesn't drop out of the tracks, finding out about inertia is like a discovery! Compare this to reading four pages about how inertia works and answering a worksheet. Designing and building a roller coaster then designing and building again and testing theories is motivational and mindblowing for a child. That is real success. These types of hands-on activities will carry conversations across recess and lunch. This is hands-on learning and inquiry to make learning happen at a high retaining level.
Students should be out of books and worksheets during science. I want them getting their hands-on projects, ideas, and collaboration brain going with other students. My students should be groaning when the recess bell rings because they want to stay in and add to their experiments. Students take ownership of their learning when they come up with an idea, not finding out from a book. That's the real spark of learning!
