My Students

The High School Library is the heart and hub of the school. It is always abuzz with activity. Students come here to study, socialize, research, read, and just be. As part of our continuous effort to remain the center of learning and life, we are adding a Makerspace.

My school is a rapidly growing suburban high school with a current enrollment over 1,750 students.

We are the most diverse, comprehensive high school in the area with approximately 50% of students being from an ethnic minority. Many of our students face a variety of challenges. For example, 40% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, 10% of our population are English Language Learners, 15% of the student body qualify for Special Education services and 20% have one or more parent/guardians who are active duty military. At my school, the variety of ethnicity, socioeconomic levels, and learning abilities are not seen as stumbling blocks. The students and staff view our diversity as a strength and our graduation rate is at an amazing 93%.

My Project

A Makerspace is just as it sounds, a designated area in the library where students can create or "make." This new trend in libraries is based on the STEAM educational philosophy that students of the 21st Century must be both consumers and producers of ideas, that project ideas need to be student initiated, the creation process be hands-on, and the learning be inquiry based. To facilitate this way of learning, students need hands-on manipulatives such as Snap Circuits, Legos, and MagnaTiles to make learning STEAM concepts relevant and engaging.

The THS Library’s Makerspace will be a place where students can create, build and craft.

This type of hands-on learning puts students in complete control; projects will be completely determined by students’ curiosity, imagination and wonder. Our Makerspace environment will foster enthusiasm for learning, build student confidence, and encourage collaboration.
