This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are always challenging me in wonderful and new ways. Doing a push-in GATE program allows me not only to work with my own qualified students but students in the regular classroom and those with special needs. Even though we are departmentalized for the subjects in grades 3rd through 5th, subjects become melded together.

Besides some educational challenges, my students face other challenges.

Just getting to school can be one of those challenges. We have a high percentage of students absent, but thankfully it is coming down in all the grade. My school has been classified as a Title I school for years due to the fact that 98% of our students are on free and reduced-price lunch. They are always in need of exposure to technology and real-world problem-solving.

My Project

When you are a young kid, you realize only the big kids get to do all the cool things. They get to build the robots, code and have competitions. That is just not fair!

This is the reason my younger students need Dash.

Dash uses Blocky, a coding language, that is easy for the younger elementary students to program. They have heard about the fifth graders programming and are eager to do it too. So eager they are willing to give up their recess to code.

The earlier the better for students to be exposed to technology, but you would be surprised how many do not know simple computer skills let alone coding. I want them to see their coding in action plus test out their skills against others in competition.
