Help me give my students a real experience of learning about Greek mythology. These books are high interest, but lower reading levels. These texts engage the ENL students in our content while exposing them to new vocabulary, too!
Our school is made up of students from over 18 nations. One third of the students are within 3 years of coming to the U.S. Many from Nepal, Thailand, Ethiopia, Somalia and the Middle East.
The diverse community that is created is amazing.
A community of faiths, languages, and cultures allows students, native born and non-native, to compromise, question and solidify a strong sense of self. They teach me more each day about perserverance, acceptance and humility than I could ever teach them!
CSR is a school with students of many backgrounds, religions and cultures. Our sixth grade family consists of ENL, ASD and students with special needs. Our first unit in ELA covers Ancient Greek religion and culture. The required reading for this unit is very challenging for the majority of our students.
Diverse texts of various reading levels help students approach the subject of Greek mythology at their level.
It is our hope that by expanding our classroom library of texts on this topic, such as Dragon Healer, Centaur School, and Steeds of the Gods, students will learn at their own pace and by their own choices, so that they have a greater stake in their education.
