For the last two years, our site has implemented the strategies of Building Thinking Classrooms into math learning environments, and I've noticed a huge difference in student engagement and math conversations between students.
In requesting the EAI Jumbo Coordinate Grids, students can enhance their mathematical understanding and continue deeper thinking math talks, on subjects like graphing, transformations, geometry, slope, and much more.
Instead of taking the time to draw the x-y coordinate -- the magnetized version is simply stick and work. Time saved.
The request for the clear sleeves and magnetic clips provides a space for teacher directions and work for students to review. Saving paper and ink, but still allowing for a reference students can refer to.
Requesting the colored stacking blocks is in an effort to take math talks from the vertical spaces to the horizontal spaces and continue the fun of math. I hope to create color coded games for review and practice of math standards & provide deeper thinking in math processing.
After 17 years of teaching middle school, today's middle schooler is a different kind of learner. They engage when they can be social; when they can be moving/standing; and when their work receives instant/quick recognition. I believe that my requested project materials will meet these learners and help them dive further into our math conversations and learning.
