Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English as a Second Language in an elementary school in rural North Carolina. My kids are considered high-need, but what they really are is highly-motivated to learn!

My language learners are motivated, but that motivation needs to be nurtured and their success needs to be tangible sometimes. I am looking for donors who understand the value of high expectations, regardless of language ability or proficiency. The more practice these bilingual learners get interacting with new words, the more comfortable they will be using them--whether writing, speaking, reading, or listening to others.

With your support, I would like to purchase magnetic sheets, on which I can print sight words, high-frequency words, content vocabulary, or even cognates. The students will then have tailored lists of words to take home and use on their refrigerators for daily high-visibility reinforcement. This will be a fun, kinesthetic and visual method of learning words, definitions, and spelling. The writing journals will be their tangible evidence of how well they have learned their words, as they maintain consistent written entries with each new unit of study.

Vocabulary and words are the cornerstone of all learning (as well as the highest area of need for English learners)--these magnetic sheets can be tailored to individual needs, making them ideal learning resources. They are also a very simple way to get families involved in learning at home!
