This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want learning to be fun for my students and new letter manipulatives will make our learning magnetic!

I am a special education teacher working in an urban, high-needs community.

My class consists of 10 students with autism ranging in age from 6 to 10 years old. My students present with a wide range of abilities. Most of my students have communication impairments and use pictures to communicate. They also have sensory issues and are challenged to remain still and focused. Despite their challenges, my students are eager and excited to learn.

My Project

It is my goal to build a well-defined, structured learning environment for my students where they can become independent learners. Throughout the day my students rotate through different activities. During this time my students are all working on skills at many different levels. My students love table top activity time and love learning with magnetic letters. Unfortunately, after a few years of use, the set is missing many letters. I am requesting a classroom magnetic letter set, a magnetic word building set, and a few magnetic boards. My students are multi-sensory learners and will benefit from the hands-on opportunities to build words with these letters. In addition, these activities will help my students to generalize their skills by offering them multiple learning opportunities with one of their favorite manipulatives, magnetic letters!
