My Project

We service roughly 450 students in our Title I school. Most of our students come from single-parent homes where access to books is limited. The library provides a space for our students to choose and be exposed to all types of books and activities that they would otherwise lack at home. It is heartwarming when the kindergartners get so excited about a book they have found and want to read. We are also a STEAM academy and incorporate STEAM activities with literacy for all ages by providing Makerspaces and Centers in the Library. We strive to keep up with the newest ways to engage students with 21st-century concepts to help them prepare for the future.

Students need hands-on experiences both to help develop physical skills and to help them make meaningful connections with the concepts they are learning.

Magnet play meets both of these needs while stimulating active curiosity and visual memory. As students create with the magnetic rods and spheres on various surfaces, they are developing an understanding of magnets and learning about spatial awareness, hand eye coordination and developing fine motor skills.
