Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I charter school where most of my students come from low economic backgrounds. Their parents have chosen a charter school because they are trying to do the best for their children despite their struggles financially. My students are curious, enthusiastic, creative and are eager to take on any kind of challenge. They have learned to experiment and manipulate the tools and materials in new ways to enhance their learning. However, what sets my students apart is the care and compassion they have for the materials that they are working within the classroom. They care and protect them as if they were their own.
My Project
Block play in so important as it develops early geometry and spatial reasoning skills. Also, physics concepts come into play as they turn and fit pieces together and build higher and higher. Problem-solving skills are also developed as they plan and answer such questions as, what size and shapes make the most stable base, and how to build it high without it toppling over.
Social and language development is also enhanced by the simple process of building with blocks.
As they work together, they have to plan and negotiate with others in order to successfully build a stable structure. As a teacher of a program where 35% of the students are English Language learners, any way to enhance language development is priceless.
