Block play in so important as it develops early geometry and spatial reasoning skills. Also, physics concepts come into play as they turn and fit pieces together and build higher and higher. Problem-solving skills are also developed as they plan and answer such questions as, what size and shapes make the most stable base, and how to build it high without it toppling over. Social and language development is also enhanced by the simple process of building with blocks. As they work together, they have to plan and negotiate with others in order to successfully build a stable structure. As a teacher of a program where 35% of the students are English Language learners, any way to enhance language development is priceless.
