My Project

My project, Magically Uncovering Invisibility, will help students solve the problem of being unable to practice laboratory techniques and skills due to the lack of funding for laboratory equipment. By providing them with a hands-on inquiry investigation, students will titrate acids and bases using industry-grade laboratory equipment. This project will need autoclave pipettes, precision laboratory scales, 50mL burettes, and a buret rack. Students will practice dilution calculations, measuring, and dilution of standards, along with titration skills in this innovative project. This investigation is a worthwhile project because it would allow students practice with titrations, to investigate acid-base neutralization reactions (SC6.h Georgia Standards of Excellence for Science for Chemistry), to obtain knowledge of lab equipment, practice preparation and properly labeling solutions of specific molar concentrations, and the proper use of chemicals. Additionally, providing students the opportunity to work in groups toward the driving question, “Is Chattooga County’s drinking water safe to drink?” allows all students time to practice critical thinking and discussion through student voice and student choice.

My goal for this project will demonstrate a measurable impact on my students’ lives is to provide students with the opportunity to learn laboratory skills and techniques using industry-grade laboratory equipment.

This goal will be measured by formative assessments. Data will be gathered during the lab activity by closely monitoring students, and asking questions. Another goal is to provide students with critical thinking skills and knowledge which will be needed in careers of science, such as medicine, engineering, and chemistry. This goal will be measured through students answering the driving question, “Is Chattooga County’s drinking water safe to drink?” in a laboratory report. These career goals will not only have a measurable impact on the individual student, but on their families, our community, state, and nation.
